Searching for a software company in Jaffna is harder than it should be. Google gives you a handful of directory listings, a few Facebook pages, and no straight answer about who can actually deliver. Meanwhile the decision matters enormously: a bad software project costs you the money, the months, and the momentum.

This guide is the checklist we wish every business owner in Jaffna had before they signed anything — including before they signed with us. Some of it will cost us work. We are publishing it anyway, because the businesses that ask hard questions make the best clients.

1. The Jaffna Software Scene in 2026

Jaffna's technology sector has changed shape over the last five years. Three types of provider now compete for your project, and they are not interchangeable.

The freelancer

Usually one developer, often working evenings alongside a job or a degree at the University of Jaffna. Cheapest option by a wide margin. Genuinely fine for a small brochure website. The risk is continuity — when that one person takes a job in Colombo or abroad, your project and your source code go quiet with them.

The print-and-signage shop that also does websites

Common along Hospital Road and KKS Road. Web work is a side offering bolted onto a design business. You will often get an attractive-looking site built on a template, with no attention to speed, structure, or search rankings. Fine if you want a digital business card. A problem if you expect the website to bring you customers.

The dedicated software studio

A registered company with a team, a repository, a process, and clients it can name. Costs more than the other two. Worth it when the software is load-bearing for your business — a POS running your shop, an app your customers use daily, a system your staff live inside.

None of these is automatically the right answer. A 60,000 LKR brochure site does not need a studio. A distribution system running four warehouses absolutely does. The mistake is paying studio prices for freelancer delivery, or handing a business-critical system to someone who cannot support it in year three.

2. The 9-Point Checklist

Work through these before you transfer any money. Every point is something we have seen go wrong for a business in the Northern Province.

1. Is the company actually registered?

Ask for the registration number. A registered (Pvt) Ltd has legal accountability, can issue proper invoices, and still exists if there is a dispute. If you are starting out yourself, we also handle company name registration in Sri Lanka — it takes days, not months, and it changes how seriously suppliers treat you.

2. Can they show you work they built themselves?

Not a portfolio of stock screenshots. Live URLs you can open. Then open them on your phone, on mobile data, and count the seconds. If their own client sites are slow, yours will be too. Ours are at our creations.

3. Who owns the source code when it is finished?

This is the single most important question in this article and almost nobody asks it. If the answer is anything other than "you do, and we hand over the repository," you are renting your own business system. When you later want to change providers, you will be starting again from zero.

4. What happens in month seven?

Launch is the easy part. Ask specifically: who fixes it when it breaks, how fast, and at what cost. Get the answer in writing. "We'll support you" is not an answer — "critical issues within 24 hours, included for 12 months" is.

5. Is it built to be found on Google?

A website nobody finds is an expensive brochure. Ask whether they handle page titles, meta descriptions, schema markup, sitemaps, image compression, and Core Web Vitals. If those words draw a blank, they build sites, not sites that rank. This is the whole reason our SEO and digital marketing work is built into development rather than sold afterwards as a rescue package.

6. Will it work properly in Tamil?

Tamil rendering, Tamil input, Tamil printed receipts, and Tamil-language SEO are not automatic. If your customers or staff work in Tamil, test it before you sign off, not after.

7. Do they understand Sri Lankan payments?

Global agencies will hand you Stripe and stop. You need PayHere, WebXPay, OnePay, Koko for buy-now-pay-later, and direct IPG integrations with Commercial Bank, HNB, Sampath or BOC for lower transaction fees. We cover the full landscape in our guide to payment gateways in Sri Lanka.

8. Can they support you in your language, in your timezone?

A local team you can visit in person is worth more than a cheaper quote from six timezones away, especially in the first weeks after launch when small things need fixing quickly.

9. Do they say no to you?

A supplier who agrees to every feature you suggest is selling, not advising. The best sign in a first meeting is someone telling you which of your ideas to cut from version one — because they are thinking about your launch date and your budget, not the invoice.

3. Seven Red Flags to Walk Away From

  • No written scope. If what you are buying is not written down, every disagreement later becomes your problem.
  • Full payment demanded upfront. Staged payments tied to milestones protect both sides. 100% in advance protects only one.
  • They will not name a single client. Confidentiality is real, but a company with years of work can always name someone.
  • Guaranteed number-one on Google. Nobody can guarantee this. Anyone who does is either uninformed or dishonest, and both should worry you.
  • The price is dramatically below everyone else. Either the scope is smaller than you think, or the project will be abandoned halfway.
  • Hosting and domain in their name, not yours. This is how businesses get held hostage. Your domain should be registered to you.
  • Vague timelines. "Two to three months" with no milestones usually means nobody has planned the work.

4. What Things Actually Cost in Jaffna (2026)

Published prices are rare in this market, which is exactly why quotes vary so wildly. Here is our honest range for the Northern Province in 2026. Treat these as starting points for a defined scope, not ceilings.

ProjectRealistic range (LKR)Typical timeline
Business website (5-8 pages)45,000 - 150,0002-4 weeks
E-commerce store95,000 - 400,0004-8 weeks
Mobile app (Android + iOS)120,000 - 900,0006-14 weeks
POS and billing systemPer counter / per user1-3 weeks to go live
Custom business system80,000 - 1,500,000+4-16 weeks

The ranges are wide because scope drives cost far more than location does. A five-page website and a five-page website with a booking engine, three payment gateways and a customer portal are not the same product, even though both get described as "a website."

5. Twelve Questions to Ask Before You Pay

Print this. Take it to every meeting, including ours.

  1. Can I see three live sites or apps you built, on my own phone, right now?
  2. Who owns the source code and the repository at handover?
  3. Is the domain registered in my company name?
  4. What exactly is included, in writing, and what costs extra?
  5. What is the payment schedule and what triggers each stage?
  6. What is the support arrangement after launch, for how long, at what cost?
  7. Which technologies will you build this in, and why those?
  8. How will you make sure Google can find and index this?
  9. Will it work in Tamil — interface, input, and printed output?
  10. Which payment gateways will you integrate, and what are the fees?
  11. Who is my point of contact and how do I reach them?
  12. What happens to my system if your company closes?

Question 12 makes people uncomfortable. Ask it anyway. A good answer sounds like "you hold the code and the hosting credentials, so any competent developer can pick it up."

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best software company in Jaffna?

Any company that answers "us" without knowing your project is guessing. The right choice depends on what you are building. For a simple website a good freelancer may serve you well. For a POS, a mobile app, or a system your staff use daily, choose a registered company with a team, a support commitment, and code you own. SiTechra (Pvt) Ltd is a registered software company in Jaffna building websites, mobile apps, POS and custom business systems for clients across Sri Lanka and internationally.

Is it cheaper to hire a company in Jaffna than in Colombo?

Usually yes — often 20-40% lower for comparable scope, because operating costs in the Northern Province are lower. The engineering is not cheaper because it is northern; the overheads are.

How long does a business website take?

Two to four weeks for a standard business site, assuming your content and images are ready. Content is almost always what causes delay, not development.

Do I need a mobile app or is a website enough?

Most businesses need the website first. An app earns its cost when customers use you repeatedly — food ordering, deliveries, bookings, loyalty — or when your staff need it in the field. If customers visit you once or twice a year, build the website and skip the app.

What if I already have a website that is not working?

Have it audited before rebuilding. Sometimes the structure is sound and the problem is speed, content, or the absence of any SEO work. A rebuild is not always the answer, and a supplier who checks first is telling you something useful about how they work.
